The RSPCA have pulled out of next years Crufts following the revelation of inbreeding issues producing dogs with severe genetic diseases in a recent BBC documentary. The BBC is also reviewing its own coverage of the event.

Shame really as they generate a lot of income at crufts as wf used to work for them at one time..Still i cant say i blame them standing by their principles as their are many bad breeders out their..Think their are too many dogs and breeding should be Monitored a bit..I am against unnecessary breeding as their are many dog problems in the uk..And it boild down to money and ego !!!grrrrrrrrrr

It will be interesting to see what the BBC does with their coverage next year. It will be rather hypocritical airing a documentary thay shows the cruelty behind these shows and then continue to heap praise on Crufts! I certainly won't be watching knowing what is going on behind the scenes! I don't think it will look good on the RSPCA if they continued to support the event knowing what is going on and benefitting from it.

The Dogs Trust has also pulled out of Crufts and major sponsor Pedigree are also considering their position.

The Kennel Club have ledged a complaint against the BBC even though:

Quote:
In a separate interview, Ms Kisko told the BBC the Kennel Club currently allowed inbred dogs to be registered with them - a requirement for entry into Crufts.

But that position would be reviewed in the next few months following the expected publication of research, by scientists at Imperial College, into whether inbreeding had detrimental effects, she added.

How much MORE evidence do they need that inbreeding is bad??? It has been known for years that inbreeding increases the risk of genetic disorders in dogs!

We already know that inbreeding and cross breeding for looks causes major problems, although I always enjoyed the agility and love dogs... I've never agreed with parading dogs around like that, they're dogs. Yes they're very cute but they're dogs and they're your loving pet, not your personal grooming and natural plastic surgery toy.
