Tell that to my other half! He is allergic to chlorophyll, something that is found in most plants/algae. It's a rare allergy (though several members of his family suffer from it) but can be potentially fatal and pretty much rules out a meat-free diet for this group of people! He can eat small amounts of potato, some cereals, and white flour-based products (not brown/wholegrain etc) though even this cause a reaction, anything green immediately causes a severe reation and even a small amount of green leaves will leave him ill for several days and suffering the after-effects of a reation for a week or more (I accidentally bought vegetarian suet dumpling mix once without thinking - never again! He was ill for ages because of that!).

So in summary, no, not everyone can have a meat-free diet. While my OH represents the extreme end of the spectrum, it is a spectrum - not everyone is the same. There is variability as to how well someone can adjust to a veggie diet (or the opposite, most people wouldn't be able to tolerate the diet my OH has to have) from those that have to have a vegan diet to those that have to have a predominantly animal-product based diet.

So please have some respect for the differences between individuals as we aren't all the same.

added to that some people just don't want to live a meat free life style and people shouldn't be judged for that.

I'm happy to discuss with anyone the benifits I have of being veggie, but theres no point in lecturing, its like flipping someones off switch isn't it?

Each to their own.
Being veggie is very important to me, but equally important is not preaching it.
My fiance isn't veggie, he never will be, and I honestly don't mind that. Respecting others lifestyles is what is important. He totally respects the fact I'm veggie, I totally respect the fact he eats meat and neither of us try to change each other.
Why would we?! We love each other the way we are.

I've never heard of a chlorophyll allergy, sounds horrible but things like that fascinate me!

I hadn't either until I met my OH Laughing Took me a while to get my head around it! It is very rare though runs relatively commonly in his family (which was fortunate for him as his mother picked up very quickly on what the problem was when he started suffering massive reactions, as she was already aware of the allergy).

Haha we're not married.

Weight gain (Atkin's diet out the window!) is a bit of an issue but not really a huge problem to be honest.

Wow. That sounds like a rather hard allergy to have to deal with. Poor guy. That must suck.

wow... that's horrible. while in some rare cases, your friend for example, people can't be vegan. other than that, virtually everyone can be vegan and healthy! Very Happy

➜US National Institute of Health: "with appropriate food choices, vegan diets can be adequate for children at all ages."

➜American Dietetic Association: "Appropriately planned vegan diets can satisfy nutrient needs of infants."
“Well-planned vegan and other types of vegetarian diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including during pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, and adolescence. "

➜The American Academy of Pediatrics state that vegan diets can promote normal infant growth.

➜Dietitians of Canada (same as ADA): "Well-planned vegan and other types of vegetarian diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including during pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, and adolescence."

I would agree with you here, but i feel i should mention (for the health of the mother and child) that Veganism during pregnancy, nursing and infancy can be a tricky thing nutritionally. Please consult a nutritionist who specializes in both pre/post natal care and animal free diets before attempting this. It is not uncommon for vegan parents (not all, but those who dont know how to adjust the diet for those with different needs) to have their kids taken when uninformed people assume they are neglectful or negligent. The vegan/vegetarian diet is perfectly fine for those of any stage of development, provided it is done with care and information and I hate seeing well meaning, loving, veggie parents slammed in the media.

I don't think that Vegans parents who are treating their children well would have their kids taken away in the UK.
We are very up on equal rights here and getting very PC!

I would like to support all animal welfare organizations but as soon as I get spam mail encouraging being a veggie I back off. I’ve had some real uncomfortable arguments with these people.

Sad that my preference divides me from people I can relate with regards animals.
