[NOTE FROM SILVERSHARK - this was meant to be in the next edition of The Realm however I haven't had time to get the magazine done with being ill over Christmas and new year, plus my voluntary work)

Interview with Windy owner of a bokoshi food digester..

Why buy??
To reduce what I send out to land fill...and also to turn waste food into compost so it helps my garden too

Expensive??
I recieved mine from Recycle Now.....2 bins and 6 months of bran for less than £40. Replacement bran is 3 months worth for £10, so I think they're pretty reasonably priced.

Do they smell??
No. I keep mine in the kitchen and there are no smells. However, when you've fermented the contents for 2 weeks and then open it to throw it in the compost bin, it does smell rather of vomit. But once in the compost bin, I cover it with cardboard and within days it has rotted down.

Guaranteed???
Ermmm, unsure about this. But I've had mine for a year now, and no complaints either about build quality or functionality.

Time consuming?
Not at all. You just bung all your food waste, cooked and uncooked, bones, meat, fish and all in it. Sprinkle a handful of bran on top and leave it. Squash down the contents every few days and drain off the liquid produced ( this can be used diluted to a 100:1 as plant food, or it can also be poured down the drain to help prevent nasty smells.)

Negative comments??
None really!!
Would recommend them to anyone. They are unobtrusive and reduce what is sent to landfill...helps reduce problems with gulls on landfill sites as well as making fab compost when mixed in my compost bin with general garden waste.
Way forward....most definately!!

its making me feel sick just thinking about it and i wretch have a tickle stomache ..The councils in uk are supposed to be giving us something similar in time... bet my council will soon get them here they give you a small one for kitchen and large one for garage/shed and you empty small into large then its collected they dont give you bran though..afraid if i end up with one o/h will have to wash it out as i definately cant..windys is different to councils as the food disolves into plant food..with the help of the bran..no way am i keeping a container of waste in kitchen either ..windys doesnt smell apparently as the bran starts fermenting it..yuk...
