There are mixed fortunes for the whales around the world with some showing increases and others in decline according to the latest IUCN Red List.

The Humpback whale has been downlisted to Least Concern, as has the southern right whale both of which have increased in most areas across their range.

A quarter of the species assessed are still considered to be close to extinction, including the vaquita that is considered the most likely to become extinct within the coming years.
