| |
| Quote: | RSPB Scotland has objected to the application by Trump International Golf Links, because it would involve the destruction of a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and other key biodiversity and habitats.
Our concern focuses on the area of untamed, wild and natural sand dunes that would be irreparably damaged by 'stabilisation' to provide the back nine of one of the two courses. This area is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) – the 'crown jewels of our natural heritage' – and, thus, legally protected, especially if alternatives are available. In addition, other parts of the area also support important biodiversity.
The developer's own Environmental Statement acknowledges that there will be very significant adverse effects on habitats and biodiversity – the mobile dunes which form one of the main qualifying features of the Foveran Links Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) will be destroyed by the stabilisation necessary to build half of one golf course.
This is one of the very best examples of a mobile dune system in the country and SSSI designation should offer such a site a very high level of protection. There are also other habitats, bird populations and further biodiversity interests which are threatened by this development.
Along with Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) and other conservation organisations, including the Scottish Wildlife Trust (SWT), we have objected to Aberdeenshire Council, making it clear that we do not object to the principle of golf, or other development, at this location but that this must not be at the cost of the destruction of the SSSI.
The application would not only be contrary to development plan policies protecting important sites for wildlife, but also to policies on housing, development on the coast and others. To allow development to proceed unaltered would seriously undermine both Scottish planning law and European wildlife legislation and would send out a message internationally that Scotland does not wish to protect our most precious natural heritage sites.
RSPB Scotland has consistently indicated that we would be pleased to advise on how such development might be re-designed so as to avoid damage to the SSSI and other important biodiversity in the area. Regrettably, Mr Trump has always refused to enter into such negotiations.
We have written to Scottish Ministers urging them to either uphold the decision taken by Aberdeenshire Council and reject the development, or to hold a public inquiry where all issues can be aired and discussed transparently.
We need your help!
If you can, please write to your local MSPs, raising the issue of the SSSI and the damage this development could do and asking them to write to John Swinney, Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Sustainable Growth, within whose remit this falls.
The Minister must be urged to examine this development and consider its impact on Scotland's priceless natural heritage. Failure to do so will set a dangerous precedent that could threaten all our protected areas. There is plenty of room for Mr Trump to achieve the main part of his development without destruction of the SSSI dunes.
What to write
Your letter should seek to encourage the Minister to ensure that whatever solution he selects it will ensure that the protection of the SSSI is guaranteed. Failure to do so sends a strong message that developers need not take account of either planning policies or our most important legally protected areas.
