A powerful earthquake that hit China has thought to have killed at least 7,000 people. The earthquake struck during the day with a magnitude of 7.8. Several schools are thought to have collapsed trapping the students inside along with two chemical plants.

Why is it that whenever anything like this happens that within hours there are massive figures of those believed to have been killed, when in all honesty, NOBODY knows the true figure that quick?

It's just an estimate based on the population number and where the earthquake is centred.

The figure is now thought to be up to 15,000. Rescuers reached a town close to the epicentre with a population of 10,000 and have only found 2,300 alive. The devestation there was worse than expected and rescue efforts are being hampered by destroyed roads and bad weather.
