Following a thread on another forum, I decided to bite the bullet and replace sanitary pads and tampons with something called a mooncup. I heard about these a few years back but they didn't sound very pleasent to use, but this time I decided to play guinea pig and give them a try (combination of the high-waste of pads and tampons, their increasing cost and generally becoming unimpressed by their effectiveness).

What is it?

The Mooncup is a reusable menstrual cup around two inches long and made from soft silicone rubber. It is worn internally like a tampon but collects menstrual fluid rather than absorbing. Unlike tampons the Mooncup is not a disposable product, so you only need to buy one.

The Mooncup will hold 30ml of fluid, which is roughly one third of the average total produced each period. A light seal is formed with your vaginal walls allowing your menstrual fluid to pass into the Mooncup without leakage or odour. You will probably find that you need to empty your Mooncup less frequently than you currently replace towels or tampons.

I don't regret giving the mooncup a try, in fact I am completely sold to it now! Though it initially sounds messy (which put me off the first time) it isn't actually that different to using a tampon even though you have to wash it out - in fact there is very little blood collected in the cup. Personally I find pads more messy. I'm also finding it more comfortable. I used to find pads and tampons left me feeling itchy but there are no such issues with these nor am I finding any problems with the mooncup leaking, which I was having with tampons.

It takes a bit longer to change than a tampon but not significantly so and with practice it becomes quicker. Having only used it for a few days I'm finding that the time to change the mooncup has already decreased a lot and it will probably continue to do so with practice.

At £18.99 it sounds expensive, but they last for years and so in the long-run save both money and reduce waste - good for the environment and the pocket! There are also not connected to Toxic Shock Syndrome which can happen with tampons and don't cause itching and discomfort that tampons and pads can.

6 months later...

I figured I'd give this thread a bump because it has been 6 months since I started using the mooncup Surprised Time really flies!

It is still fantastic and saving me a fortune not having to by other stuff, plus it has benefits for the environment so definately give it a try! It is good for your pocket and really helps reduce waste! I can't imagine going back to anything else now!
