Mangrove loss may have left Burma more exposed to the full force of the cyclone that has killed more than 22,000 people. Mangroves act as a natural buffer to storms, sea surges and tsunami as was seen in the Boxing Day Tsunami where areas still with healthy mangroves suffered less damage than those without. Bangladesh is one country that is taking this to heart - they are one of the only areas where mangrove cover is increasing.
