This is absolutely rediculous that people enjoying a hobby like photography are ended up treated as criminals! The paranonia in this country is getting to really absurd standards now...

This does start going a step too far, I can understand the concern being there but I think we have to remember that overall humans are pretty good creatures... not perfect by any means but most certainly don't have any bad intentions.

Yeah, it's making the majority suffer for a very small minority.

Having experienced a similar situation and on a railway station as part of my main hobby, I didn't hesitate in sending the link out to as many people as I could. If they are going to stop Joe Public, then they had better start FAST with the Press and Paperatzi, or how ever it is spelt.

I've done a few trains before, I think a lot depends on the station - the big ones being more about security and the smaller, old ones more about tradition and asking the station master.
Still the press should be the first to be cracked down on.

I was on a rather small station in Essex and where I spent most weekends of my childhood, taking photos of how it is now, AFTER first showing my Railway ID, obtaining permission and explaining why I wanted to take some pictures. Ten minutes later over the station PA system, I was asked to stop in the interest of Anti-Terrorism and at 60 years of age. I chose to ignore their request, continued until asked again and so stood waiting for the Police who I am still waiting for, almost a year later. I have since returned and despite the station being unmanned, yet another PA Announcement was made asking me to stop. I am going to try it out again next weekend and if it does happen again, I will be lodging a formal complaint to the company concerned.

The station being unmanned thats pretty scare I must say, very big brother nation. The thing is in your situation, surely they must have seen you there before. I hope you get it resolved.

The best bet, although inconvienint, is to just smile and co operate and even say sorry i didnt know the new regulations then they just let you carry on, I get stopped and questioned when at the airport, i just smile and listen and talk nicely to the policeman (whos in riot gear with a rifle!!!) and then he just says, well if you see anything suspicious, alert the nearest authority.

I dont usually get asked to delete my photos, i just say they are for personal use, not commercial use, say putting them on public website. I know i put them on an aircraft forum but thats a special place for them.

They just get over worried now which is a shame but i beleive that they are in a * Damned if they do, damned if they dont* situation.

Interestingly I went to the museum after college and specifically asked before hand if photography was allowed. It is, I just need to sign a small slip first.

The thing that occurred me was - why don't we all check the current laws, and write to the council asking photography of local buildings and such like is okay, this maybe the long way around but perhaps a temp. solution that you can produce and official statement that what you're doing is allowed if you are asked to delete your photos.

I will return to the same station this weekend and IF it happens again, I will insist on the British Transport Police being called................. and then produce my Railway ID, PLUS A WRITTEN guide issued by Network Rail. I will also take it up with NR next week and I DO have some contacts within it, who are a touch higher than some mere member of Station Staff. I will also demand the same member of staff PROVES I was acting as some kind of threat to them, or the station. When put out, I can be very nasty tongue wise.

Bite your nasty tongue, by all means prove your point and produce your evidence but being nasty could come back to bite you.

Thats true, although you maybe boiling up inside its best to smile and co operate as being nasty could reinforce their idea of wanting to stop you or even worse.

At the airport i dont think i would want to protest at a guy with a big brifle lol Laughing

I've just finished reading the article and this is ridiculous - especially when, as it was pointed out in one of the article's comments, photos can be taken on far more discreet devices than an SLR camera. Why would a terrorist bother to use an SLR, when they can just use their mobile phone?

Are we going to end up in the situation where you can be stopped for using any device in the fear that you could be up to something dodgy? The police or the powers-that-be are going to have to stop everyone. Rolling Eyes

I think that's the way it is going, pretty soon the police will be jumping on old ladies carrying a box of cornflakes in a Tesco carrier bag thinking that the box contains explosives or something.

Nowadays, everyone is a terrorist.

If you are against Bush, you are a terrorist.
If you don't want your privacy being invaded by the gov't, you are a terrorist.
If you don't agree with Bush's policies, you are a terrorist.
If you look like you are of Middle Eastern origin then you are a terrorist.
If you are of Middle Eastern origin, or from any other nation where people can pass for it, then you are a terrorst.

If you aren't a Christian, or you are a Muslim or follow Islam, then you are a terrorist.
If you have your own opinions, and don't eat the b.s. fed to you by the media, and the gov't then you are a terrorist.

as sad as this is, it doesn't surprise me in the least.. but then again, according to what I posted above, I am a terrorist.

There is a such thing as a concern for safety, and there is a such thing as paranoia too. I think we passed "concern" a long time ago.
