The Maldives has banned the hunting of reef sharks throughout it's 28 atolls following continued declines of the sharks despite a hunting ban around the main tourist sites where the sharks draw in the tourists. The total ban gives sharks complete protection around the whole of the Maldives and it is hoped that the shark numbers will quickly recover. This may pave the way to a complete ban on the export of shark products from the Maldives.
