The Issue and Latest Status

In 2008, WWF activists helped convince Congress to increase funding for programs that protect rhinos, tigers, elephants, great apes, sea turtles and neotropical migratory birds. We need your help again. The Bush administration is once again trying to slash funding for these vital programs, even as the threats to these animals continue to grow. Let Congress know that the Bush administration has it backwards; more funding is needed, not less.

What's at Stake

These creatures are under growing pressure from habitat loss, poaching, and other serious threats. A new census shows that only 1,400 wild tigers remain in India -- a shocking drop from around 3,600 in 2002. In Africa, gorillas are threatened by disease and human conflict that spills over into their sanctuaries. All of these species need protection, and many require urgent action.

Congress created the Multinational Species Conservation Fund to protect these magnificent animals. Through these funds, our country is able to help save endangered species worldwide. For 17 years, grants from these programs have funded a wide range of successful conservation measures, including anti-poaching patrols, habitat protection, animal population surveys, and disease prevention. These successful efforts have helped some species hold their own or even increase in numbers. The sad fact remains, however, that many of these animals are still highly endangered because the threats they face continue to be large while the funding is limited.
