Several feathers that date back to the period when dinosaurs roamed have been found encased in amber. The 200 million year old feathers shared characteristics with both fossilised dinosaur feathers and those of modern birds. Whether the feathers come from a bird or dinosaur is unknown, but fossil remains of feathered dinosaurs have been discovered in the layers of rock above the amber.
