Beck's petrel was thought to have became extinct more than 80 years ago, but an expedition fueled by suspected sightings of the birds resulted in more than 30 of the birds being photographed off the Bismarck Archipelago, north-east of Papua New Guinea - including juveniles which suggests that the breeding colony is somewhere nearby. However, the petrel is far from being out of the woods yet. Cats and rats along with deforestation on the islands where the birds are thought to be nesting somewhere are a real threat to the remaining population.

That's fantastic news. Now that they have been 're-discovered' we can do more to help them.

Just goes to show what can re-appear Hopefully the colony will be found and protected before something else gets there first.
