Beck's petrel was thought to have became extinct more than 80 years ago, but an expedition fueled by suspected sightings of the birds resulted in more than 30 of the birds being photographed off the Bismarck Archipelago, north-east of Papua New Guinea - including juveniles which suggests that the breeding colony is somewhere nearby. However, the petrel is far from being out of the woods yet. Cats and rats along with deforestation on the islands where the birds are thought to be nesting somewhere are a real threat to the remaining population.
